FROM THE IEP ROOM TO CONGRESS

We’ve got each other’s back.

Overview

IEP Circles, a program of Parents United for Public Schools, brings parents and caregivers together to advocate for children with disabilities both inside the IEP/504 room and with elected officials. Through community building, special education trainings, and collective action, we create a supportive network where families can learn, share, and stand up for one another, led by local leaders grounded in the shared experiences and challenges families face every day.

Starting An IEP Circle at Your Local School

Form a small core team within your public school district. Grow your team by connecting with other parents through social media, PTA/PTOs, and working with your district.

Strengthening Education for Children with Disabilities

Host an IEP Binder event to build community and compare IEP services, minutes, and goals. Parents United can provide an expert to guide and answer questions.

Holding Elected Officials Accountable

Broken elevators, lack of transportation, closed special education rooms…we’ve heard it all and we’re fighting back. Identify your local district’s funding issue and Parents United can help make your voice heard to decision-makers.

Income should not dictate services

Ability should not dictate the quality of education

Stigma should not dictate possibilities

Parents know the challenges of navigating the IEP/504 process—and too often, we face them alone.

Parents of children with disabilities often have to advocate for accommodations for their kid's education. This can include access to communication devices, items for sensory regulation, a classroom or bus aide, or simply more time to complete a test. We believe sharing our IEP (individualized education plan) and 504 experiences on the local level empowers parents of children with disabilities to be better advocates for their children in IEP rooms and to their elected officials. Fill out the form, tell your story, and we'll connect you with your local IEP Circle chapter.

What Are IEP Circles?

IEP Circles are ongoing, parent-led groups that:

  • Demystify the IEP/504 process through shared experience and practical tips.

  • Support families emotionally and materially with peer coaching and resource-sharing.

  • Organize to protect and expand services—locally, at the Statehouse, and in Congress.

  • Build power so parents have a real voice in decisions that affect our children’s education.

Parents, caregivers, and allies of children with disabilities who believe in the power of public schools—and want to make sure every child in Ohio has the resources and support they need to thrive.
